A beautiful art catalogue showcasing over 130 rare treasures from the Tokyo National Museum.  It accompanied the exhibition Splendours of Japan, which opened at Te Papa in 2006.

The catalogue covers material from ancient Japan and the early life of the first Japanese people dating from 3000BC, the Iron Age and the golden age of Buddhist art; (with its rare scrolls, artworks and statues) and the Edo period, or Japanese ‘Enlightenment’, which represented a high point of many Japanese art styles, including woodblock printing and Kabuki.
The book gives revealing views of the intricacies of Japanese life, such as the tea ceremony, noh theatre and calligraphy, and also Japanese military life (with exhibition pieces like armour, helmets, swords, blades, hilts and their mountings a particular highlight).
