What will I learn?
The workshop will be composed of a lecture-style presentation, group discussion and problem solving; as well as a practical demonstration and some hands-on practical collection tasks for participants.
Subjects that will be covered during the day are:
• Registration - what is it?
• Obtaining legal ownership
• What type of forms to use
• Obtaining information from donors - what questions to ask
• Cataloguing - what is it? How do you do it?
• Creating a meaningful numbering system
• Marking accession numbers on objects – what are the rules?
• Cataloguing forms
• What basic information is needed
• Classifying objects - what are the different systems to use and how to pick one?
• Databases -what systems are available?
Who will I meet?
• Trish Nugent – Lyne manages a large collection with an emphasis on Whanganui social and natural history. She has advised many small museum and historical societies in the Whanganui, Rangitikei, Taranaki and Bay of Plenty on physical and database collection management procedures.
• Other museum personnel in your region - a great networking opportunity!
