South Otago: Care of Paper- based Collections Workshop

Location: South Otago Museum (Balclutha Museum), 1 Renfrew Street, Balclutha

Entry: $10.00


This will cover:
• The manufacture of paper
• Why it deteriorates
• Methods of slowing or preventing this deterioration by managing
• temperature fluctuations, high RH, excessive light, pollutants, dirt, insects & rodents.
• Designing good storage
• Developing proper handling procedures
• Reformatting as a preservation tool
• Developing a Preservation Plan

Printed material on a number of these topics will be provided plus a list of useful websites.  Catalogues of preservation material available in NZ will also be provided.


Who will I meet?
Lyndsay Knowles is a paper conservator who has been working for 30 years in Australia and New Zealand for both public institutions and privately.  She was Senior Conservator of Paper at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne from 1992 - 2004.  Since returning to NZ she has conducted ‘Care of Paper- based Collections’ workshops in Auckland, Whangarei, Tauranga, Timaru and Blenheim.

Who is it for?
This workshop is an opportunity for representatives from small museums, heritage organisations, the arts and cultural sector, iwi organisations, and others in the region to learn useful new skills and share ideas.

• Pen and paper to take notes
• Your lunch (morning and afternoon tea will be provided)
